Lumpectomy
Lumpectomy is considered a breast-conserving surgery because only the lump (the part of the breast that has cancer) and part of the breast tissue around the lump are removed. It is an operation in which a small volume of breast tissue containing the tumor and a surrounding margin of healthy tissue is removed to conserve the breast.
Mastectomy
Mastectomy is the medical term for the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely.
A mastectomy is usually carried out to treat breast cancer. In some cases, women and some men believed to be at high risk of breast cancer have the operation prophylactically, that is, as a preventive measure. It is also the medical procedure carried out to remove breast cancer tissue in males.
Sentinel lymph node biopsy
A sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node(s) to which cancer cells are most likely to spread from a primary tumor. A sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) can be used to help determine the extent, or stage, of cancer in the body. Because it involves less extensive surgery and the removal of fewer lymph nodes than standard lymph node surgery, the potential for adverse effects, or harms, is lower.
